The Mamquam Falls Trail: Hidden Gem in Squamish
Tired of the overcrowded trails in Squamish? As someone who frequently hikes this area as a local to Vancouver, I can tell you that the Mamquam Falls Trail is one of the best-kept secrets in Squamish. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for a peaceful, scenic hike that offers incredible views without the heavy foot traffic of more popular spots.
I’ve hiked this trail myself and can personally vouch for its charm in every season. In this post, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know—from when to visit to what to pack—so you can enjoy Mamquam Falls like a seasoned local.
Stick around because I’m also sharing my free Hidden Gems Guide, which highlights the top off-the-beaten-path spots in the area. Plus, you’ll get a sneak peek into my 7-day itinerary for the Sea to Sky Highway, designed to help you uncover the best this iconic route offers.
Trail Details
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Time: 1 hour
Elevation Gain: 60 meters
Season: Year-round
Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
How to Get to Mamquam Falls
Follow the Mamquam River Forest Service Road from the Sea to Sky Highway for approximately 3 km. Then take a left onto Powerhouse Springs Road. The last 2 km of the road to the parking lot is not paved, so you should drive slowly on the gravel road.
I suggest starting this easy-to-moderate Squamish hike from the unmarked trail from the parking area.
You’ll see that the yellow gate next to the parking area is locked and has an anti-trespassing sign, so do not go that way.

What to Expect Along Mamquam River
The Mamquam Falls Trail runs alongside the Mamquam River for most of the hike, offering easy terrain with beautiful views of the water. Depending on the season, you’ll either see the river’s striking turquoise hue in spring and summer, thanks to the glacial runoff, or the milky white waters of fall and winter. This variation makes the trail worth visiting year-round.
As you move through a mix of forested areas and open sections, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or a short rest along the riverbank. Keep in mind that parts of the trail may become muddy in the wetter months, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, especially in fall or winter.
For wildlife lovers, the winter season offers prime eagle-viewing, as Squamish is a hotspot for these majestic birds. On weekdays, you’ll find the trail relatively quiet, which is perfect if you’re looking for a peaceful, crowd-free experience. However, weekends, especially long ones, can see an increase in visitors, so plan your trip accordingly.

Planning Your Trip
Trail Conditions and Timing
This easy-to-moderate trail is suitable for most fitness levels, including families and hikers with dogs (as long as they’re on a leash). While the elevation gain is minimal, be prepared for uneven ground in some spots. The hike takes about an hour round-trip, but it’s worth taking extra time to enjoy the scenery, snap some photos, and relax by the river.
When to Go on the Mamquam Falls Hike
The trail to the waterfalls is accessible year-round, making it a great option, no matter when you’re visiting Squamish. However, the best time to hike is between late spring and early autumn, when the weather is mild and the trail conditions are optimal.
Winter hikes are possible, but you may encounter snow or icy patches. If you’re visiting in December like I did, you’ll likely spot eagles, as Squamish is a prime eagle-watching destination during this season.
Avoid long weekends if you’re looking for a quieter experience, as the trail can get busier with locals and tourists.

What to Pack for the Mamquam Falls Trail
Since the Mamquam Falls Trail can be hiked year-round, your packing list will vary based on the season:
- Summer: Pack plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes near the river.
- Winter: Dress in warm layers and bring waterproof clothing, as the area can be wet. You might also want microspikes or other grips for your shoes to handle icy patches on the trail.
- Year-round: Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, bring snacks, and don’t forget your camera! A light rain jacket is also recommended, as Squamish can have unpredictable weather.
Recommended Duration for the Visit
If you’re planning to visit Mamquam Falls as a standalone hike, set aside about 1.5 to 2 hours. The hike itself takes about an hour, but you’ll want to give yourself extra time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and maybe have a short break by the river.
If you’re looking to make it a day trip, combining Mamquam Falls with some of the nearby attractions (like the eagle viewing at Brackendale, a ride on the Sea to Sky Gondola, or a stop at the Railway Museum) will turn it into a full-day experience.
Be sure to account for driving time, as getting to and from Squamish takes about an hour from Vancouver.
Nearby Attractions

If you’re visiting Squamish during this time, be sure to bring binoculars and stop at the eagle viewing areas to watch these majestic birds in their natural habitat.
Sea to Sky Gondola
For breathtaking views of Howe Sound, the coastal mountains, and Squamish, head to the nearby Sea to Sky Gondola.
The ride-up offers panoramic vistas, and once at the top, you’ll find multiple hiking trails, a suspension bridge, and viewing platforms. This is a great option if you want to extend your adventure after your hike to Mamquam Falls.
