The Joys of Camping

Camping is a great way to connect with nature. And a great way to escape from the noise, hustle, and bustle of the city.

I was introduced to the fun of sleeping under the stars and enjoying nature for more than just a day at a time late in life. Like with many other things, my best friend Greg got me hooked on hiking and camping; my life has never been the same since.

Living here in Vancouver, I feel as though there are two types of people—the super-adventure-y ones who go camping on long hikes and who regularly enjoy other outdoor activities each weekend. And then there are those that don’t like going outside very often. Where do I fit in? Well, I love being outside, but I don’t like extreme sports. There are tours like this Rainforest Waterfall Hike and Suspension Bridge small group tour for those who want to get out into nature more often.

The Pros and Cons of Camping

Pros and Joys of Camping

  • 1. Connection with Nature
Camping allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world. The fresh air, starry nights, and the sounds of wildlife can be incredibly soothing and rejuvenating.
  • 2. Digital Detox
Unplugging from technology and the constant buzz of social media and emails can do wonders for your mental health. Camping provides the perfect excuse to switch off and be present.
  • 3. Physical Activity
From setting up camp to hiking and exploring, camping involves a lot of physical activity. This can be a great way to stay active and improve your fitness while enjoying the great outdoors.
  • 4. Budget-Friendly
Camping is often a more affordable travel option compared to staying in hotels or resorts. It allows you to experience beautiful locations without breaking the bank.
  • 5. Camaraderie and Bonding
If you choose to camp with family or friends, it can be a wonderful way to strengthen relationships and create lasting memories. Even solo campers often find camaraderie with fellow campers they meet along the way.

Cons of Camping

  • 1. Comfort Challenges
Sleeping on the ground, dealing with weather changes, and managing without modern conveniences can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to be prepared and bring the right gear to enhance comfort.
  • 2. Insect Encounters
Nature’s beauty comes with its own set of critters. Insects like mosquitoes can be a nuisance, so packing insect repellent and appropriate clothing is crucial.
  • 3. Limited Facilities
Depending on where you camp, you might have limited access to bathrooms, showers, and other facilities. This can be challenging, especially for those used to certain comforts.
  • 4. Weather Dependence
Camping is heavily dependent on weather conditions. Sudden rainstorms or extreme temperatures can make the experience less enjoyable and potentially dangerous.
  • 5. Safety Concerns
Being in the wilderness comes with its own set of risks, from wildlife encounters to navigating unknown terrains. Proper planning, research, and precautions are essential for a safe camping experience.

With the short summers we have in Canada, it’s important for me to get outside as much as possible during July and August. Sadly, the camping season seems to be extending each year in Vancouver. It’s sad because we don’t get as much rain as we used to (leading to droughts and heat waves during the already-hot summer months). But, since it does get so hot in the summer months, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the slightly cooler weather in May and June to experience the joys of camping.

A scene like the one below gets me thinking about ways that I can put together my camping gear kit soon so I can enjoy looking up at the stars (with no light pollution from the city), hear every sound outside (insects, birds, leaves rustling in the breeze), and relax knowing I am “unplugged.”
