Auberge des 21 Saguenay Review: Is It Worth the Hype?
This post has been sponsored by Tourisme Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean. I was hosted for a media trip but all opinions are my own.
When planning a trip to La Baie in Quebec’s Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, choosing the right place to stay is key to making the most of your visit. Whether you’re here to hike, relax, or take in a show, this inn has everything you need for a memorable stay in the heart of the action. What I liked most about my stay at the Auberge des 21 was the cozy atmosphere – perfect for my visit in May when the temperatures were a bit chilly! I spent three nights in the Saguenay region, and this was one of the hotels I stayed at. Auberge des 21 is located on the edge of the beautiful Saguenay Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its prime location in La Baie offers guests breathtaking views of the water and the surrounding natural beauty. Known for its culinary excellence, the Auberge des 21 Restaurant has earned a reputation as one of the best restaurants in Saguenay. The chefs here are passionate about using locally sourced ingredients and crafting dishes that reflect the rich flavours of Quebec. Auberge des 21 Restaurant’s menu boasts a variety of unique and local items. Whether you’re indulging in a hearty Québécois dish or savouring something lighter, every bite tells a story. The on-site restaurant offers à la carte dishes, 4-9 4-course table d’hôte menus, and a gourmet tasting menu, with a strong focus on local, fresh ingredients certified by Aliments du Québec. The chef offers fine terroir cuisine: “Terre” means “land” in French. Terroir, therefore, is a French term meaning all food expresses a sense of place. It is the belief that the flavour and character of a food product are directly attributable to the climate, geography, and farming practices from which it sprung. Special dietary needs? Le Doyen has you covered with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, and kosher options available upon request. La Baie is the place to be for outdoor lovers and culture enthusiasts. During summer, the lush green trails with stunning waterfront views call out to hikers and bikers. A personal favourite is the Sentier Eucher Trail, which I haven’t yet hiked but is on the top of my list for when I return. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Saguenay Fjord. If you’re looking for a quiet hotel nearby, there are several options that are family-friendly and offer easy access to these outdoor activities. If you visit in winter, you’re in for a treat with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities. The nearby Mont-Bélu ski resort is a hotspot for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Additionally, consider visiting the local marine park to experience the beauty of winter wildlife. Exploring La Baie’s rich cultural attractions is as easy as stepping out of Auberge des 21. The Musée du Fjord offers immersive exhibits on the region’s natural history—ideal for families and history buffs alike. Get all the details in my full Musée du Fjord blog post. Don’t miss the historic village of Val-Jalbert, where you can wander through well-preserved buildings (and many in shambles….which adds to the “ghost town” atmosphere) dating back to the early 1900s. Get all the details in my full historic village of Val-Jalbert blog post. Auberge des 21 doesn’t have a spa (with massage facilities), but that doesn’t mean you can’t relax. There are two courtyard hot tubs set in a relaxing, beautiful environment. First off, the room options are great. Whether you’re looking for a cozy standard room or something a bit more spacious, like a suite, they’ve got you covered. And let me tell you, waking up to a view of the Saguenay Fjord? Absolute magic. The rooms are spotless, and I mean that. They’re cleaned daily, and you can just feel the freshness when you walk in. Plus, the beds—super comfy. I’m talking about the kind of bed that makes it hard to get up in the morning because you’re so relaxed. Whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple, or a family, you’ll find a room that fits your needs. They even have options with multiple beds if you’re travelling with a group. Now, here’s where it gets good. The rooms are fully loaded with all the modern conveniences: flat-screen TVs, fridges, minibars, coffee makers, and hair dryers. Everything’s there, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. And, of course, there’s free WiFi—because who can go without that? One of the standout features for me was the attention to detail. They’ve thought of everything, from safes in the rooms for your valuables to those little extras like complimentary coffee and tea. It’s the kind of place where you feel taken care of without all those annoying extra charges. But what really sets Auberge des 21 apart is the whole experience. It’s not just a place to sleep—it’s where you can truly unwind. The views, the quietness, and the overall vibe make it feel like a retreat.
